The Maule Valley of Chile is one of the country's largest wine-producing regions, with some of its oldest vines, and historically is best known for its reds. There is a recent interest there in sustainable and organic growing practices, and even some dry farming to increase red varietal flavor intensity, from this region that is one of the country's more southern (and therefore cooler) growing areas.
Cabernet Sauvignon is a key red variety in the Maule, as it is in many of the primary regions in Chile - in fact, only France has more total vineyard area dedicated to this noble red. In relatively cooler climates such as this, Cabernet Sauvignon tends to produce wines with blackcurrant notes that can be accompanied by herbal tones, mint and cedar which all become more pronounced as the wine ages.
Tuesday Night Red is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, and a truly pleasant example at this price. Though typically assertive in flavor as Cabernet is, this one is gentle in style: black fruits, and a slightly ripe fruit edge in the nose and on the palate, with a touch of black licorice and pepper. There is still a freshness to the black currant-like taste, and a soft balance between the acids and natural tannins. This is not a porterhouse steak and cigar type Cabernet, but the beef food pairing is still hard to beat - for this bottle, on a Tuesday night, maybe a great grilled burger with sharp cheddar and caramelized onions instead!
