The countries of Eastern Europe have been making wine longer than most of the better known wine regions in the world. Even though many of these countries primarily made wine for Russian consumption these wines are starting to make a name in the United States for exceptional value and quality. Alexander the Great Merlot is from Bulgaria and is a beautiful example of this kind of value wine. The grapes for this wine were hand-selected from the best vineyards around the country. This wine has a robust, warm palate with notes of ripe plum and red fruit. Like many Merlots, this is a versatile food wine but it may pair best with elegant red meat dishes.
