2016 Coorong Chardonnay/Semillon, Riverina, Australia Vineyards: Across Australia, winemakers celebrated the exceptional quality and quantity of vintage 2016. The growing season was largely uneventful, but slightly warmer and drier conditions made vineyard management a breeze. For this wine, both Chardonnay and Semillon grapes benefited from the soil composition; a combination of silt and medium red clay held water and cooled the vines, complementing the vintage weather conditions. Harvest for both varietals occurred during the cool nights of February. Each varietal was crushed, chilled, and bag pressed before fermenting at cool temperatures.
The Chardonnay received French oak treatment during fermentation and aged an additional two months after fermentation. Blending Chardonnay with Semillon immediately adds body and richness; the additional oak aging on the Chardonnay brings even more of this richness into the wine. Wine: The color of this wine is pale straw with a touch of green highlights. Lifted aromas of stone fruit and a touch of citrus create an inviting bouquet. On the palate, crisp lemon and lime zest flavors give way to white peach and delicate nutmeg nuances, indicative of the French oak.
