California and Zinfandel are a match made in heaven. However, many people think of Zinfandel as an American grape. In actuality, Zinfandel is a long existing grape, believed to have originated from Hungary or Croatia. It was a really unknown grape though, until it re-surfaced in California. Advertised as California’s original grape, it became a signature standard that helped propel the state to the world stage. The reason it worked so well? Because California and Zinfandel truly do belong together.
Leaping Lizard takes the name from the very common lizards that lounge in the sun of the hilltop vineyard where the grapes for this wine are grown. However, as the winery points out, while the lizards are common, the Leaping Lizard Zinfandel is a deliciously uncommon California wine.
These wines are all small lot and hand processed to ensure quality. Designed to be youthful and vibrant, the flavors are meant to leap out of the glass. Rich and luscious, the fruit is balanced with notes of oak and spice on the nose. These flavors mingle on the palate with a hint of tobacco leaf. A nice and rich Zinfandel.
